This year, the international climate negotiations will take place in Warsaw from the 11th to the 22th of november. This Conference of the Parties (COP), organised by the UNFCCC, is held for the 19th time and we have remained silent for too many years. We feel that action is needed again! Governments have failed repeatedly to come up with decent proposals and we can't afford to stand by and wait. Moreover, we see that instead of our planet, big companies are profiting from the negotiations by imposing a "green" economy and having us pay for it.
On the barricades!
While there is enormous strength within civil society to build solutions from bottom-up, we should never loosen pressure on our governments. The discourse that anyone can do something by taking the bike, turning off the light and buying organic-food tells only a partial truth. We do not want to give governments an excuse to retain the status-quo because “citizens will solve the problem through individual behaviour change”. We need to organise, mobilize and go into the streets to urge governments to take action.
Take the streets of Warsaw!
At the time of the negotiations in Copenhagen, the international climate movement was strong and hopeful. Thousands of people were mobilized for the mass demonstration “Planet First - People First”. We call for a similar event during COP19, where we will take the streets of Warsaw in a march for Climate and Social Justice. Profound changes in society happen through citizen mobilisation and demonstrations. International movements are growing stronger in the wake of the financial crisis; this is the time to mobilize again and combine our demands, pushing for climate ánd social justice.
Practical information on march
The march will take place in Warsaw on Saturday Nov. 16th in the afternoon. We will start at the Palace for Culture and Science, an important meeting place for civil society around the COP, located in the historical centre of Warsaw. We meet at 2pm and the march starts at 3pm. We will walk over one of the central avenues towards the National Stadium where the negotiations take place. Our partners in Poland will provide music and megaphones. One of the key attributes will be eyes, in all shapes, sizes and colors, to show the negotiators we are watching them very closely.
Step up and support this initiative, together with the movement "Klimaat en Sociale Rechtvaardigheid - Climat et Justice Social", the Belgian and the Polish Climate Coalition.
We'd also like to know if you already have plans with your organisation to go to Warsaw.
